Organization profile
sarmap s.a. is an owner managed high-tech company in the field of remote sensing and geographical information systems.currently constituted of 8 employees.Founded in January 1998, as a spin off from the Remote Sensing Laboratories, University of Zurich, its headquarters is situated in southern Switzerland. It was founded in January 1998 to provide consulting services, software development and applications in the domain of remote sensing, particularly airborne and spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data processing. Geographic Information System services are also offered to extend the analysis functionality of these data for public and private sector customers. Application areas of expertise include high resolution Digital Elevation Model production, ground deformation maps, cartography, forestry, agriculture and land use classification.
Sarmap s.a. is currently managed by Messrs. Paolo Pasquali and Francesco Holecz who are respectively President and Chiel Executive Officer (CEO)
sarmap company owns 30% of sarmap geomatics srl, in Italy and 20% of GeoSAR SA, in Switzerland. This group of companies benefits from the combined experience of the partners in the fields of GPS, photogrammetry and high resolution aircraft sensing while also facilitating expansion into new market segments.
Company's competencies
The main goal of the company is to deliver value added remote sensing products and software tools to final users (from space agencies to local entities). The experience of its technical team in various domains of remote sensing incorporates thematic applications using optical sensors, SAR data processing and analysis, and object oriented software design. This interdisciplinary nature fosters an imaginative and flexible approach to problem solving. The link with universities and research institutions is fundamental in order to benefit from the most recent developments in remote sensing data techniques. Training and product support are also key elements of the service offered in order to provide ongoing assistance to the client
Company's core business
sarmap's core business focuses on the exploitation of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from both spaceborne and airborne sensors, while recently it has also begun activities in combining optical data from various sensors with radar data. In addition the company offers consulting services in the field of Geographic Information System (GIS). Our main areas of expertise are in:
Development of operational software for space borne and airborne SAR and optical systems
Development of new algorithms for future sensors
Generation of Digital Elevation Model using space borne and air borne SAR systems
Generation of tailored thematic products for land applications
Processing and mosaicing of very large data sets
Summary of professional experience
sarmap has carried out projects for and collaborated with the European Space Agency, the Joint Research Center - European Commission, and a large number of private and public enterprises. Close contacts are maintained with several European universities including the Remote Sensing Laboratories, Zurich and the Milan Polytechnic. In the following section, some selected completed projects are outlined:
Development of SARscape® an operational software system for the processing of SAR and optical spaceborne data dedicated to the generation of products. This processing chain is embedded in the ArcView® GIS environment and runs on Personal Computers and SUN Workstations, under Windows 98/NT and UNIX operating system, respectively. Version 1.00 has just been released on the market.
Development of an operational software system for generation of high resolution Digital Elevation Models using the X- and P-band AeS-1 airborne SAR system. A collaboration with Aero-Sensing Radar system GmbH.
Generation of a high resolution (25 m) Digital Surface Model for all of Switzerland utilizing ERS SAR data.
Development of a pre-processing chain for ERS and ENVISAT SAR data for crop identification for the European Space Agency Data User Program project, Dedicated Remote Sensing Generation for the Agro-industry, led by SYNOPTICS (NL).
Development of a processing chain for ERS SAR data for rice identification for the Joint Research Center project, South East Asia Rice Radar Investigation (SEARRI)- Operational Phase, led by SYNOPTICS (NL).
Forest burnt-area identification in Brazil by the combination of NOAA-AVHRR, ERS and JERS-1 SAR images for the Joint Research Center, European Commission, Ispra (I) within its FIRE project.
Principal Investigator for the project, Operational System for Forest Fire Detection and Burnt Surface Mapping, within the Data User Program (ESA) in collaboration with Intercooperation (CH), Chevrier S.A. (CH), and the Canadian Forest Service.
Development of an operational software system for the project, Product Development for Mapping and Monitoring of Land Cover Dynamics in Tropical Areas, f or the European Space Agency Data User Program, led by the Remote Sensing Laboratories (RSL), University of Zurich (CH).
Consultancy to the Joint Research Center of the European Commission, Ispra (I), on Calibration of JERS-1 SAR data and software components integration within the Central Africa Mosaicing project, sponsored by the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration / Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA/JPL), Alaska SAR Facility (ASF), and Joint Research Center (JRC).
